Building a Digital Twin-Ready 3D BIM Model for a Telecom Tower

About the Customer

A global telecommunications infrastructure operator focused on modernizing its tower assets to enable digital twin adoption, improve asset visibility, and support future data-driven operations.

Situation

The client had 2D CAD drawings and site photographs of an existing telecom tower and required a precise, lightweight, geometry-only BIM model to support future asset tagging, analytics, and digital twin integration.

Task
  • Converting 2D CAD data into a 3D geometry-only BIM model
  • Accurately modelling the tower structure and telecom equipment
  • Ensuring compliance with client BIM and IFC standards
  • Delivering a model optimized for future data enrichment

Action / Approach
  • Analysed 2D CAD drawings to extract structural and equipment dimensions
  • Validated equipment type, orientation, and layout using site images
  • Modelled tower components – legs, bracings, platforms, ladders, and safety elements
  • Created simplified, geometry-only Revit families for antennas, RRUs, microwave dishes, cable trays, and power equipment
  • Ensured correct placement, elevation, and alignment
  • Performed visual QA/QC and IFC readiness checks

Result
  • Establish a solid 3D geometry foundation for digital twin initiatives
  • Enable future asset tagging and parameter population without rework
  • Reduce modelling effort and downstream project risk
  • Maintain a lightweight BIM model suitable for enterprise workflows

Tools / Software
  • Autodesk Revit
  • Autodesk AutoCAD
