GIS Mapping of Utility features

About the Customer

The client is a regulated and integrated utility company, based out of the United States.

Business Challenge

Geo-packages are created from different sources like schematic maps and hand-drawn maps. Due to this, Electrical Utility Assets such as Power Plants, Electrical Transmission Networks, Substations, Poles, etc. are not aligned with the current satellite imagery. As a result, these assets are not spatially in sync with the As-Built drawings of the utility infrastructure and a lot of features, and their related attributes are missing in the existing data.

Solution

AABSyS uses QGIS, an open-source GIS platform to spatially adjust the data using the client-provided images and online images which are available through the QGIS plugin. Through this QGIS plugin, Google Maps, Bing Maps, Here Maps, ESRI Maps, etc. can be accessed. AABSyS also refers to Google Earth and Street View Images wherever available for better accuracy and to identify some of the features that can be captured from the same, to reduce the physical survey effort.

Benefits
  • Existing features and their attributes are retained
  • Wherever new features are created, appropriate attribute data is filled for those features
  • Final data is topologically correct, and the logical connectivity of assets is maintained
